For my senior capstone project, I worked in collaboration with NASA on their Sew Psyche’d Campaign. This is in promotion of their Psyche mission, an exposed metal core of an early planet. Exploring this asteroid could unlock the secrets of planetary formation.
The Sew Psyche’d Campaign calls all creatives to design their own 1x1ft squares using textile arts. Together these pieces will form a collective, tactile version of the unexplored asteroid. My job was to create a deliverable that could be used to promote this campaign and get people involved. In addition, I designed my senior exhibition around this topic, as well as my senior book which shows my process.
The challenge I identified was how to get people personally invested in a space mission that feels distant. I realized that to truly engage people, especially those outside of the science community, we needed to create an emotional link. That’s where Sew Psyche’d comes in. The problem wasn’t about lack of interest—it was about lack of connection. My job is to build that bridge.
I started ideating and wanted to do an activity kit where NASA would provide kids without access to supplies, the materials needed to participate. That idea was shot down as it was intangible, and I switched from elementary school kids to an older age when I realized that they probably shouldn’t be playing with needles.
I landed on a booklet, which turned into a zine, where I would teach different techniques of textile arts so that people can get started on their projects with no prior experience.
